The post This Frank Lloyd Wright Inspired Cabin Lets You Sleep Above A 50-Foot Cavern appeared first on Columbus Navigator.

We feature a lot of beautiful cabins in Ohio, but every once in a while a place comes along that feels like it belongs in its own category. The Ledge at Lost Cavern is that kind of stay.

Inspired by the clean lines and natural harmony of Frank Lloyd Wright and Philip Johnson, this modern hideaway sits on 24 secluded acres in Hocking Hills with floor-to-ceiling windows that pull the landscape right into the living room.

The surrounding property is dotted with caves, rock formations, and seasonal waterfalls, so the view is constantly shifting with the weather and the light.

After a day exploring the region’s classic trails, the house gives you a quiet place to land. You can sink into the hot tub and watch steam rise into the trees or curl up by the fireplace while the forest gets dark outside the glass walls. The home is perched above a dramatic 50-foot cavern and the sound of water moving through the rocks on rainy days adds to the atmosphere. It feels remote in the best possible way.

The Ledge has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and sleeps six guests. Your hosts provide all sorts of goodies to help keep you entertained during your stay, including board games, kitchen supplies for baking or cooking together, Wifi, and more. You can see a fully itemized list of all of the cabin amenities right here.

If you plan to visit during the winter months, an all wheel drive vehicle is strongly recommended. The home sits back from the road, and the hills can get icy. When you are ready to plan your trip, you can head over to thelostcavern.com.

These Incredible Glamping Geodomes Are Tucked Away In Hocking Hills https://www.columbusnavigator.com/hocking-hills-geodomes/ Wed, 05 Nov 2025 05:31:04 +0000 https://www.columbusnavigator.com/?p=52634 We love a unique weekend getaway, and there's nowhere more special than these geodesic domes in Hocking Hills.

Hocking Hills is full of all kinds of unique getaways.

From the storage container houses to houses built in caves, if you are looking for a non-cabin stay in the area, you have plenty of fabulous options. One of the most incredible spots is the Hocking Hills Geodomes.

Located at The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls, the property is surrounded on three sides by Hocking Hills State Park. A visit to the geodomes is perfect for visitors who just want to relax and enjoy nature.

via Facebook

The domes are super cozy, but before we get into that, let’s just talk about the fantastic potential of staying in a dome that has floor-to-ceiling clear walls.

via Facebook

While laying in bed, you can look out over the property, and on a clear night, you can even see the stars!

The geodesic domes feature over 700 square feet of interior space and 14-foot tall ceilings at the highest point. The interior of the domes has a very contemporary yet comfortable vibe with exposed metal piping, butcher block shelving, custom tiling, and more.

via Facebook

Each accommodation has a king-size bed, a small dining table and chairs, a couch, a coffee table, retro kitchenettes, and custom bathrooms.

From the outside, the domes look so simple. They have a deck surrounding them that seems like a perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee on a brisk morning.

via Facebook

The geodomes also feature indoor plumbing, HVAC, and electricity, so you can have all the comforts of home while you’re tucked away in nature. Due to the easily damaged nature of the structure, kids under 12 and pets are prohibited in the geodomes.

The benefit of the geodomes being located at The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls is that you’ll be super close to all of the inn’s amenities. You could get a hot stone massage or a full body scrub, have a fine dining experience at Kindred Spirits Restaurant, or do a little shopping at the gift shop.

via Facebook

Of course, the property itself is located near some of Hocking Hills’ best attractions. Just because you’re out exploring the park all day doesn’t mean you have to skip out on good food. You can grab lunch to-go from the inn’s restaurant which will taste even better once you’ve hiked out to enjoy the natural beauty of the park.

The Inn & Spa At Cedar Falls is located at 21190 OH-374, Logan, OH 43138. If you’d like to learn more about booking your stay at the Hocking Hills Geodomes, please visit the Inn & Spa At Cedar Falls website.

The Moonville Tunnel May Have A Spooky History, But It’s Also A Beautiful Place For A Hike https://www.columbusnavigator.com/moonville-tunnel-legend/ Fri, 24 Oct 2025 04:16:15 +0000 https://www.columbusnavigator.com/?p=56664 It's part spooky history, part gorgeous nature.

The post The Moonville Tunnel May Have A Spooky History, But It’s Also A Beautiful Place For A Hike appeared first on Columbus Navigator.

]]>
In the woods near Zaleski State Forest, you’ll find one of the last physical reminders of the ghost town of Moonville.

In 1856, a local man named Samuel Coe gave the Marietta and Cincinnati (M&C) Railroad permission to construct a new rail line across his property near the now Zaleski State Forest. The railroad line had obvious benefits for Coe, offering him an easy way to ship coal on his property, so he offered the land for free.

via Facebook

Around the railroad, a new community was born. Moonville was home to mostly miners and railroad workers and although it could never be described as a booming metropolis, it was a tight-knit community of about 100 people at its peak.

By the early 1900s, coal mines in the region started closing and the community began to dwindle. By the mid-1940s the last family living in Moonville abandoned the town. Now, the only tangible remnants of Moonville are the old schoolhouse’s foundation, a train tunnel, and the community cemetery.

via Facebook

But just because people don’t live in Moonville full-time doesn’t mean that it’s faded completely into obscurity. These days, the ghost town moniker is metaphorical to some but literal to others.

Every year, paranormal believers gather at the Moonville Tunnel to see if they can catch a glimpse of one of the many ghosts of railroad workers that were said to have been struck down by a train.

Even if you aren’t a believer in the supernatural, there are still plenty of reasons to visit the tunnel. The abandoned railroad line is being converted into walking and biking trails.

The Moonville Rail Trail is a 10-mile trail that takes visitors through the beautiful woodlands of Zaleski State Forest, as well as the Lake Hope State Park wetland areas.

The trail passes through the 100-foot Moonville Tunnel, but it’s not the only tunnel you’ll see along the way. The King’s Hollow Tunnel is a 120-foot tunnel carved through rock and lined by wooden beams.

Finding Moonville Tunnel can be a little tricky, but ODNR provides these instructions to find it.

“From US-33, turn south onto OH-278 towards Lake Hope State Park. After passing Lake Hope, turn left on Wheelabout Road. Stay straight on this road. This becomes a gravel path and eventually crosses a one-lane bridge. Park near the old rail bed and cross Raccoon Creek to pick up the trail. Moonville Tunnel is about 100 yards from this point.”

Southeastern Ohio is notorious for spotty cell phone service, so it may be worth printing out your instructions before you head out. Here are a few other tips for visiting the tunnel.

 • There are no bathrooms available near the tunnel, so make sure you find a place to relieve yourself before you head out. There are restrooms available at nearby Lake Hope State Park.
 • The tunnel gets pretty dark, even in the daylight hours, so be sure to bring a flashlight.
 • If you park in the lot nearby, the tunnel is accessible to wheelchairs.
 • The Moonville Tunnel is located in a remote area. Be sure you come prepared for the great outdoors by bringing bug spray, appropriate footwear, water, snacks, and anything else you might want for a day out in the woods.

Located less than an hour’s drive from Columbus, this little-known creation is an Ohio family must-see.

After being laid off during the Great Depression in 1932, Harry “Ben” Hartman started filling his time with his passion for natural construction. He turned his yard into a garden of rock structures, numerous plants, and statues of animals and people.

He spent years putting together the garden and after he passed away in 1944, the garden was maintained by his wife followed by a folk art preservation group over 50 years later.

The Hartman Garden is now owned by the Friends of the Hartman Garden group who launched a grand re-opening of the space in 2010.

Now, the garden is open every day to the public for self-guided tours through the quirky masterpiece.

via Facebook

Walking through the garden you can see historically themed rock structures, hand painted figurines and garden beds full of seasonal plants and blooming flowers.

Mary Hartman loved having visitors in the garden to see her husband’s work after his passing.

Please be respectful when visiting the garden by staying out of the flower beds and leaving all the rocks as you found them.

A stroll through the structures is completely free of charge.

There’s nothing better than enjoying a summer afternoon with an ice cream cone.

I remember visiting the Ye Olde Mill as a kid and being completely mesmerized. How could I not be? It was a giant old mill dedicated to making the most wonderful thing on earth. Ye Olde Mill is still just as majestic as when I was a kid.

Originally built in 1817, Ye Olde Mill is home to Velvet Ice Cream’s corporate offices, an ice cream museum, and an ice cream parlor restaurant. Tens of thousands of people visit the mill each year, which sits on 20 beautiful acres of rolling hills.

via Facebook

Velvet Ice Cream was founded by Joseph Dager in 1914.

Dager was an immigrant from Lebanon and he started making ice cream in the basement of a confectionary in Utica, offering three flavors: chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.

The company produced 200 gallons of ice cream a month after just two years of business and the velvety texture of the product inspired the name. In 1960, Velvet Ice Cream moved into an old grist mill. Ye Olde Mill opened a turn of the century ice cream parlor in 1970 and it’s been beloved by local families ever since.

via Facebook

Ye Olde Mill offers an ice cream museum to explore, catch and release fishing ponds, nature trails, and more.

It’s a fantastic way to spend the day with the family Throughout the summer, Ye Olde Mill has a variety of fun events on weekends, including live music. You can keep an eye on their Facebook page for upcoming events.

Ye Olde Mill is located at 11324 Mount Vernon Road, Utica, OH 43080. They are open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It’s about a 45 minute drive from Columbus, so plan accordingly. You can visit their website here for more information.
