RAPID 5 Aims To Connect Columbus Waterways And Surrounding Communities

The RAPID 5 project has a huge goal: to connect five major waterways across Franklin County.

The project will include Big Darby Creek, Alum Creek, Scioto River, Olentangy River, and Big Walnut Creek. Plans for each waterway and the green-space and trails that surround them fall to five different design firms.

RAPID 5 isn’t just about connecting our waterways. It’s also about providing access to everyone in the county and connecting the surrounding areas to the waterways that flow through them. Designers are being encouraged to dream big on this project and so far, the ideas are definitely big.

At the confluence of the Big and Little Darby, a gondola offering views of the region from above has been proposed by REALM Collective, the design firm working on the region. On the southern end of the Scioto River, one idea is to add an outdoor music pavilion and a new park area.

There are some really incredible ideas coming out of this project already, which you can see in detail on the RAPID 5 website. The project has been the culmination of a group of Columbus organizations and businesses. The ideas that have already been shared are so encouraging and exciting, it’s hard not to get a little hyped.
