A $900,000 renovation of the Ohio Theatre has been completed.

The funds for the renovation came from the State of Ohio budget and they had to be used for the repair, reconstruction, or construction of physical property. Private donations also contributed to the project, which included safety upgrades and a general facelift to the upper level of the theatre.

The safety upgrades entailed reconstructing the stairs, installing new handrails, replacing the railings lining the loge, and more.

“We’re excited to see this long-needed renovation finally complete, and just in time for brighter days ahead as things slowly begin to return to normal,” stated CAPA President and CEO Chad Whittington. “This renovation is an important safety enhancement for our patrons, enabling us to offer an even better customer experience. We can’t wait to put it to use!”

The first post-renovation performance in the Ohio Theatre will be the Columbus Symphony’s Haydn Festival, Friday and Saturday, May 21 and 22.

“The Columbus Symphony is thrilled to be the first to welcome patrons back to CAPA’s newly renovated Ohio Theatre,” stated Columbus Symphony Executive Director Denise Rehg. “We know our patrons will enjoy and appreciate the new upgrades and safety enhancements as they immerse themselves in the outstanding talents of the CSO musicians and the exceptional acoustics of the Ohio Theatre.”

The Ohio Theatre opened on March 17, 1928 and was designed by Thomas Lamb as a “palace for the average man”. IT started as a movie theatre, complete with its own orchestra and of course, the theatre organ. Vaudeville found a home on stage at the Ohio Theatre with famous performers like Cab Calloway, Jean Harlow, and Ginger Rogers.

Today the theatre hosts over 100 performances per year and is a National Historic Landmark.
