OH-Go! Lunch Is Offering Free Lunch For Kids Around Franklin County This Summer

OH—Go, Lunch!, the city-wide program offering children free, nutritious meals and snacks is open for the 2020 season.

According to Feeding America’s 2019 Map the Meal Gap Study, one in five children in Ohio do not have access to sufficient and nutritious foods. Food insecurity isn’t just an issue faced by Ohio’s children. Across the country, over 11 million kids lived in food-insecure homes before the pandemic hit. The USDA estimates that that number could jump to 18 million.

There’s a critical need for programs like OH-Go, Lunch! and with over 185 locations around the state, they’re stepping up to help kids in need.

“We knew the need would be more critical this summer and we’d have to find creative ways to ensure this program continues in a safe manner,” said Amanda Wampler, Columbus Recreation and Parks Departments’ senior manager of development. “We’re excited that we’re able to work together to increase the number of meals served to address the additional need this year. The way our partners work together is a testament to their commitment to our community.”

Columbus City Schools, a partner of Go, Lunch!, is providing the use of its food production facility and 15 refrigerated trucks to deliver thousands of meals daily throughout Franklin County.

“Columbus City Schools is one of many committed partners that enable Go, Lunch! to serve hundreds of locations. Partners of the program range from large, multi-site partners like Columbus Recreation and Parks Community Recreation Centers, Columbus Metropolitan Libraries, Children’s Hunger Alliance, SON Ministries and WARM to small community centers, camps and churches,” said Julie Pruett Bishop, Project Manager for Columbus Recreation and Parks’ Youth and Family Nutrition Office.

Columbus Recreation and Parks is the largest sponsor of Go, Lunch! and provides meal services at 45 locations. In 2019, Go Lunch! served an average of 7,800 meals a day throughout the summer.
