Nearly 200 local small businesses received $10,000 grants through the Downtown & Short North Arts District Small Business Response & Recovery Grant Program.
The Capital Crossroads and Discovery Special Improvement Districts (SIDs) and the Short North Alliance facilitated the distribution of the grants to 193 local small businesses. The program was developed with the City of Columbus to serve local small businesses that have been negatively impacted by COVID-19 and that have not already received funding from the City of Columbus or Franklin County.
Through this program 41% of awarded businesses were woman-owned, 27% minority-owned, 21% LGBTQ+-owned, and 16% were immigrant-owned. All of the businesses employ 25 employees or fewer, with 104 awarded businesses currently employing five employees or fewer, and 89 businesses employing six to 25 employees.
The funding for the program came from legislation passed by Columbus City Council that authorized the Downtown and Capital Crossroads SIDs and Short North Alliance to manage and distribute $2 million in CARES funding to support small businesses in the downtown and Short North Arts District areas.
“The Columbus small business community plays a significant role in providing employment opportunities to our local workforce,” said Columbus City Councilmember Emmanuel V. Remy. “These grants will help offset revenue losses due to decreased foot traffic and spending in the Downtown and Short North Districts, allowing these small, walkable businesses to keep their doors open, while protecting jobs at the same time.”
Both areas were awarded $1 million each to distribute and facilitate the program. The application window was open to businesses Dec. 1 through Dec. 3, and fund disbursement started back on Friday, Dec. 18.
