The Motorists Topiary Park Apartments Will Be Complete In Spring 2019

When I met with Michael Lisi, the Assistant Vice President of Corporate Services at Motorists Insurance Group, I asked him how he was doing. He replied, “If I were doing any better, I’d be twins!”

Lisi was very excited to show me the site where Motorists Insurance Group will complete the first part of a large-scale development project, their visitor parking lot. This first building will contain 105 rental units consisting of 41 two-bedroom apartments and 64 studios and one-bedroom residences. A 4,000-square-foot retail space will face Washington Avenue, and Motorists hopes work with the city to turn Library Park North into a pedestrian promenade.

This mixed-use building will have five floors, but the bottom floor will be slightly underground due to the slope of the site. They’re still deciding on what sort of rooftop amenity they’ll add to the top of the structure.

The company is working with Robert Weiler Co., Moody Nolan Inc., and EDGE, a landscape design firm. According to Lisi, they plan to break ground on the project in the spring of 2018 and have it done a year later in the spring of 2019.

“We decided to go with a design that would match the culture of this community,” said Lisi.

While the design concept for this development is being called a New York City brownstone, Lisi assured me that these buildings are inspired by the area that will surround them. Motorists wanted their build to reflect the architecture of the King-Lincoln and Olde Towne East neighborhoods to the development’s east, the modern renovation of the Main Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library on the west side of the project, and the history of the Topiary Park.

“Our mission is to be the most trusted and responsive carrier in the independent agency system. We are an integrated group of companies with one vision and shared values as the foundation for all we do. We support the vision by providing peace of mind for our policyholders’ way of life. Everything we do comes from a customer perspective with a service mentality,” said Lisi. “We create growth opportunities for our agents. We value, support, and invest in our associates. Our positive environment encourages teamwork, expects innovation, and rewards excellence. We team with our policyholders, agents, and associates to make a lasting contribution in all the communities we serve.”

There are several surface parking lots on the Motorists campus, and the company decided it’s time to give a new life to these spaces. When the first phase of this project proves successful, Motorists will continue to develop the areas. They’ll build a total of five different complexes, and some will have parking garages.

“If we build these buildings, we support our vision. We will make a lasting contribution to our community right here in Columbus,” said Lisi.

The company has been a part of Ohio’s capital since 1928. The first building on their campus was built in the 1940s and had additional floors added in the 1960s. The Motorists Mutual Building—the bronze tower that proudly bears the American Flag—has a total of 21 floors and was completed in the year 1973.

Motorist Insurance Group has been a part of Columbus quite some time, and they are looking forward to providing the community with these charming new places to live.

“We have the chance to make this really beautiful and contribute to downtown,” said Lisi.
