After Tim Ryan, a Youngstown Congressman, announced his decision not to run for Ohio governor, Democrats scrambled to find a candidate to usurp the position from state Republicans. Quickly attempting to fill that vacuum is Joe Schiavoni, a Columbus-born attorney and current Senate Minority Leader.

Says Schiavoni, “I am not a career politician, and I’m not going to be the anointed candidate. But I am a fighter, the fighter that Ohio needs.” Comforting words to a party worried about reaching rural and blue-collar Ohioans.

Since retiring from her federal position as administrator for the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, Betty Sutton, a former United States Representative, has also been positioning herself as the Democratic candidate. “I am giving serious thought to a run for Governor,” She divulged, “and will have an announcement next week.”

Sutton has also been seen networking with key state figures in an apparent move to strengthen her base and jump start momentum for the upcoming campaign.

Other democratic hopefuls areOhio Supreme Court Justice Bill O’Neill, former Representative Connie Phillich, Mayor of Dayton Nan Whaley, former Ohio Attorney General and current Appeals court judge Jennifer Brunner, former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray, and Mayor of Youngstown Jay Williams. None of which, as of yet, have officially announced their intention to run.

Possible Republican candidates include Attorney General Mike DeWine, Secretary of State John Husted, and Lt. Governor Mary Taylor.
