Take A Road Trip To Holden Arboretum In Northeastern Ohio For A Fantastic Outdoor Adventure

We’ve spent a lot of this summer discussing some of the best day trip destinations in Ohio, and we’ve got another fantastic option for you right here.

Covering over 3,600 acres, The Holden Arboretum is “a living museum that promotes the importance of trees and woody plants.” When visiting the Arboretum, which is located in Kirtland, Ohio, visitors can explore over 20 miles of hiking trails and stroll through public gardens.

There’s a children’s play area, a beautiful pond, and even an incredible tower where you can hike to the top for some truly stunning views of northeastern Ohio. But the thing I’m most excited to share with you today is their newest exhibit, Stickwork.

Created by artists Patrick Dougherty, Stickwork is full of twisted branches and hedges, all created with natural materials.

“We are thrilled to bring this whimsical outdoor sculpture to Northeast Ohio,” said Jill Koski, president and CEO of Holden Forests & Gardens. “Patrick Dougherty’s outdoor artistry celebrates our connections to the natural world, and we are all appreciating and relying upon the benefits of nature more and more these days.”

Dougherty and his son started building the sculptures on August 10th and now, all of their hard work is complete and the exhibit is open to the public. Stickwork will be on view at the arboretum for at least a year until it begins to deteriorate naturally.

“While touring the Holden Arboretum, I was struck by what a wonderful public resource it is, especially in these times,” said Dougherty before the build started. “It offers people contact with the natural world in a refreshing way. I look forward to contributing a sculpture to such a beautiful place.”

The drive to Holden Arboretum will take you about 2.5 hours from Columbus. Due to COVID-19, you must have a timed ticket to visit and all tickets must be purchased in advance. Adults are $15 and children three to 12 years old are $10. Both the Canopy Walk and Emergent Tower are included in the price of admission.
