One Photographer + Two Adorable Polar Bears = An Award Winning Photo

Photographer Grahm Jones photographed a beautiful moment between a mother bear and her cub, and now it’s won a national award.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has announced the winner of the 2017 AZA Photo Contest. The annual contest highlights “exceptional photography taken at AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums.”

The photo submissions had to be taken at an AZA facility, but their composition could vary, featuring everything including animals, people, habitats, or other zoo or aquarium scenes.

Taking home the award this year is is Grahm Jones, a photographer at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Jones put himself in a harness, leaned out over the polar bear enclosure, and snapped this gorgeous photo of Anana and her cub, Amelia Grey.

Jones is a graduate of Columbus College of Art & Design and has worked in the zoos media production department since 2003. If you’ve ever ogled over baby zoo animals or checked the zoo’s social media, then you’ve been admiring his work.

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of Jones around here. My personal favorite has to be the adorable baby rhino that Jones photographed in October.

In a press release from the Zoo, Jones said his goal is to present others with imagery that stirs their emotions and causes them to care about the Columbus Zoo’s mission to protect wildlife and wild places.

Jones may have won the award, but two other Columbus Zoo photographers received honorable mentions. Dave Liggett was mentioned for his photo called “Dama Gazelle”, and Amanda Carberry for her snowy portrait of a red panda.
