Global Academy Is Making A Big Impact On Students, And You Can Help

Tis the season to give back.

If you’re still looking for a worthy cause, I have a suggestion for you. I was killing time on Facebook a couple of days ago when I came across a post that tugged at my usually untuggable heartstrings.

The Columbus Global Academy is a sixth through ninth grade program in Columbus City Schools. I chatted with Director Derick M. Vickroy about the school and the awesome opportunities they’re providing for their students.

“Our mission is to equip our students for success in their home schools by focusing on English language acquisition,” explained Vickroy. “Our student population is wonderfully diverse, composed of students from all around the world. Our students speak between 20 and 25 different languages and observe several different religions.”

At Global Academy, the school does more than just educate students. They also run a school store that addresses all sorts of student needs, providing items from basic school supplies to winter coats.

By partnering with School Success Stores, a project funded by United Way, the school was able to get the organization going.

“Our staff has been providing this support for several years,” said Vickroy. “In the last one and half years, it has been become more formalized with the help of Student Success Stores. With this support, we have been able to address students’ needs in an effective way by expanding our volume of goods.”

Meeting basic needs of students doesn’t just help kids in their everyday life. It helps them excel in their academics.

The school has seen an influx of students after the wake of Hurricane Maria, and their store has been depleted.

The school is accepting donations of all sorts of clothing, including gently used boys clothing, size 10 to men’s large, boys shoes size 6 to men’s 10, gently used girls clothing size 10 through women’s large, and girls shoes size 5 through women’s 9. There is also a pressing need for winter clothes, boots, coats, and everything else that comes with preparing for an Ohio winter.

“Our school is highly focused on language acquisition, which is necessary for academic success and future opportunities,” said Vickroy. “The School Success Store is one more support system that allows us to help those who need it and move on with the important business of educating our students.”

If you’d like to make a donation, you can call the main office at (614) 365-8811. As Mr. Vickroy explained, Ms. Maddox or Ms. Emmers will be happy to coordinate donations.
