Thanks To The Columbus Metropolitan Library, You Can Stream The Criterion Collection And Thousands Of Other Movies For Free

Columbus Metropolitan Libraries is offering an awesome opportunity to film buffs around the city.

Thanks to the streaming program through Kanopy, cardholders of the library system can stream thousands of incredible films, including selections from The Criterion Collection.

Criterion is a curated collection of the best films from around the world. They’re also responsible for changes to the cinema industry, such as letterboxing (those black bars that keep your viewing quality maximum), bonus features on films, and commentaries.

In addition to Criterion, Kanopy also offers other genres and lists, including the New York Times Critics’ Picks, documentaries, informational films, and even language studies.

So now that have you have this new-found access to the Criterion Collection, where do you start? There are currently dozens of films available through Kanopy in the collection. Here are the five you can’t miss.

Summertime (1955)

Katherine Hepburn stars as a middle-aged secretary from Ohio who’s finally living out her dream of spending a summer in Italy. On her trip, she begins a romance with a married Italian man, eventually causing her to realize that sometimes, it’s better to leave the party before it ends.

Purple Noon (1960)

Based on the novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, Purple Noon tells the story of Tom Ripley, played by Alain Delon. The film eases viewers into a tale of friendship and comradery before exploring a darker side.

Lord of the Flies (1963)

Based on the iconic novel, Director Peter Brook’s naturalistic film is provocative and engaging. It allows the viewer to feel part of the world of the boys as they fight for their survival.

An Eastern Westerner (1920)

Follow the story of Harold, a spoiled, entitled East coast kid as he heads west to experience ranch life in rural, west coast America. This iconic western-parody film is just 37 minutes long, but it’s a staple for any early film buff.

Breathless (1960)

This French film may be a little rough around the edges, but it changed French cinema. The film tells the story of a young criminal, intrigued with Humphrey Bogart and determined to cause trouble. The film was unique for its time, featuring a bold style and an unconventional use of jump cuts.
