Around the country, protesters will gather this weekend to voice their outrage over the Trump administration’s policy of separating children from their parents at our nation’s borders.
The president and his administration have been criminalizing immigration and immigrants, from revoking Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) to ramping up intimidating ICE tactics. Although Trump signed an executive order stating that families would no longer be separated, it’s unclear how long that policy will remain in place, especially since detaining families together is a violation of the 1997 Flores Settlement.
Additionally, little to nothing has been done to reunite families, with parents being deported while their children remain in undisclosed locations around the U.S. with virtually no contact from their loved ones.
The nationwide protest is depending on everyday citizens, like ourselves, to show up and prove that this inhumane policy won’t be accepted by the American people. The Columbus rally will be held on the west lawn of the Ohio Statehouse.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, with guests and advocates speaking until around noon. The ACLU encourages all participants to know their rights when attending public protests.
