Celebrate The Indians Opening Game On The Big Screen

Everybody loves an underdog story. But you know what baseball fans love even more? Winning.

If you just started watching major league baseball last year, then you may think that the Cleveland Indians are an amazing team. They had a 22-game winning streak that pumped hope into the veins of Indians fans everywhere. But if you’ve been watching the game for awhile, you know that wasn’t always the case.

The Indians, like other professional sports teams in the city, were “victims” of the Cleveland Sports Curse, a superstition regarding a 52 year period during which no major league teams in the city won a championship. Although the curse was finally broken by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016, it’s still fresh in the mind of fans.

In 1989, a film called Major League was released, portraying a fictional Cleveland Indians team full of underdogs, rookies, and aging veterans, who (spoilers) go on to win the American League Championship. In the nearly 30 years since it’s release, Major League has left a lasting mark on Cleveland baseball fans and is often quoted during games.

This year, Indians fans are hoping to capture the winning spirit of the film by not only making it into the playoffs again but taking home the world series.

To celebrate the Indians getting the 2018 season underway, the Drexel Theatre in Bexley will be showing their own doubleheader. The evening will get started with a screening of Major League, followed by the Cleveland Indians vs. Seattle Mariners on the big screen for opening night.

Tickets for the film are $5, and the showing of the baseball game is free. The film will start at 7:30 p.m. on March 29. 2018, with the game to follow. Please click here for more information.
