Indianapolis based company Buckingham Cos. has been awarded a $500 million project to create a mixed-use community in Franklinton.
The project, which is being led by Columbus Downtown Development Corp and the City of Columbus, will bring 1,700 residential units, up to 800,000 square feet of office space, 150,000 square feet of retail, and 150 hotel rooms- if all goes according to plan.
The project was announced earlier this year, with competition from major developers around the city slowly being eliminated until Buckingham came out on top.
“Buckingham’s experience creating vibrant new neighborhoods is a natural match for the impressive vision that Columbus has for the Scioto Peninsula,” Scott Travis, senior vice president of development for Buckingham, said in press release.
Buckingham has been responsible for big city project like this before, including Aertson Midtown in Nashville, a similar mixed-use area.

The plan for the development in Franklinton is to keep it a multi-income area, not just offer high-end redevelopment, and to embrace the spirit of the artists’ community in the area.
“We pride ourselves on building the right environment in the right place. Our design process is intensive and detailed, we’re very excited to get started,” said Travis.
Expanding our “downtown area” across the river may seem daunting, but the project will be done in installments over the next decade.
