The Best Development News Of 2017

2017 is coming to an end and as we look back on the year in Columbus, it’s hard not to be excited about the future.

This year, the city continued its upward growth trends, with several new and exciting projects coming into development.

Here are 5 Development Projects that people can’t stop talking about.

Scioto Peninsula

Proposed development by Buckingham Cos. for the Scioto Peninsula

This project has been exciting Columbus residents ever since it was announced. The developer was finally chosen at the beginning of this month, which means this decade-long project is about to begin.

Indianapolis-based firm Buckingham Cos. will be bringing the massive, mixed-use space to life. It will include 1,700 residential units, up to 800,000 square feet of office space, 150,000 square feet of retail, and 150 hotel rooms.

“Buckingham’s experience creating vibrant new neighborhoods is a natural match for the impressive vision that Columbus has for the Scioto Peninsula,” Scott Travis, senior vice president of development for Buckingham, said in press release.

The project is also looking to incorporate the personality and flair of the Franklinton neighborhood, by working with local business owners and artists.

Graduate Hotel

Graduate Hotel will open its first Columbus location in the old Bollinger Tower in the Short North Arts District. Graduate Hotels are trendy, fun, and reflective of the communities they join. You can bet that this “college town” hotel will become a favorite destination for Ohio State fans and alumni.

The hotel will have 171 guestrooms, 4,000 square feet of meeting space, and two food & beverage outlets. Additionally, the ground floor of the hotel will be extended out to North High Street, in order to offer retail space.

Construction on the Graduate Hotel in Columbus will begin this Spring.

Market Tower

A massive, 35 story tower is set to begin construction in March 2018. Rising above the North Market, Market Tower will be one of the largest skyscrapers in the capital city.

The building will be home to residences, as well as retail and commercial spaces. The proposed timeline for this build is ambitious. After breaking ground in early 2018, the building is slated for partial occupancy by fall 2019.

River & Rich

Builders, planners, and even the Mayor broke ground at River & Rich in East Franklinton last spring. Although the plans for River & Rich have been in the works for years, residents have actually been able to see this development come to life.

The 6-acre site will now be home to 230 one and two bedroom apartments, both garden and townhouse style. In addition to housing, River & Rich will also provide a 292 space parking garage and 25,000 sq. feet of retail space.

The first buildings in the project are nearly completed, with an expected finish date of early summer 2018.

Crawford Hoying and Marriott International Inc. are teaming up to bring a new, 118-room hotel to the Short North.

Located at 800 N. High Street, the 10 story building will include the Moxy Hotel, a ground floor restaurant, office space, and a rooftop bar. Since parking is always on everyone’s mind when it comes to the Short North, it should be noted that the Moxy Hotel will be valet only.

I don’t know about you all, but I’m pretty excited for the ways our city is growing!
