Ampersand Asian Supper Club Will Leave You Longing For Ramen

The first time I had ramen noodles was not a memorable experience.

I can say this with authority because I very clearly do not remember the first time. I do know that they were regularly available at my house growing up and I probably wouldn’t have survived my late teens/early twenties without them.

But the first time I had real ramen is a whole other story. I’m a little spoiled I think because the first time I had ramen I was living in Hawaii. Once I tasted the flavorful broth and the perfectly cooked noodles, made lovingly by my older, Japanese-American neighbor, I was in love.

Columbus has a fair few places to get a truly delightful bowl of ramen, but I’m never mad about adding another one into the mix. Ampersand Asian Supper Club opened back in June, and I’m sad to say I hadn’t had the chance to check it out until recently.

But boy was it worth the wait. I stopped into Ampersand for lunch and felt that familiar, love-at-first-bite feeling once again. With the lunch menu, you get an appetizer and complimentary water and green tea. I knew I wanted ramen and I decided to be brave and try the Spicy Shoyu Chicken with Nori fries to help distract me from the heat.

Everyone knows that food is better with friends, so my companion decided to try their Teryaki Chicken rice bowl and the miso soup.

It was all so fantastic. The broth of the ramen was so insanely flavorful and the Nori fries were perfectly seasoned. I had a few bites of the miso soup and the rice bowl as well, which made me wish I could suddenly eat about four times as much food as usual.

The restaurant itself is clean, modern, and comfortable. You can sit at the tables or the counter where you order. Additionally, guests can eat in the tatami room, a six-person dining area with a shorter, traditional Japanese-style table and pillow seating.

Ampersand Asian Supper Club is located at 940 N High St. in the Short North. Convenient parking is available in a garage across the street and the restaurant is easily accessible via the COTA CBUS route.

I feel like I should let you know that once you have a taste of Ampersand, you’ll likely be counting down the minutes until you can come back again. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!
