This Early 90s COSI Wedding Is The Most Heartwarming Thing You’ll See Today

Weddings at COSI may be all the rage now, but they weren’t always so common.

In 1993, Mark and Melinda Schmidbauer were planning they’re big day, and they knew they wanted to get married somewhere unique.

“We always saw wedding receptions as mostly boring for the guests and wanted an alternative. We saw a brochure at the ‘old’ COSI about holding events including weddings there, at a price that was fairly comparable to getting a normal wedding hall,” Mark told me. “We jumped at the chance. I know this wasn’t the first wedding there, but it wasn’t common.”

The pair, who were self-described nerds, met through a blind date at a Star Trek convention. Melinda was working as a technical writer and Mark was doing IT for the State of Ohio, so the science museum seemed like the perfect fit.

The couple tied the knot in September 1993. The ceremony was held in the Dream Land theatre. Afterward, the guests were allowed to explore COSI and volunteers ran the exhibits for them, including the planetarium, the coal mine, and the suspended bicycle. The bike was particularly entertaining, considering it used to be outdoors, so guests were suspended in the air in the heart of downtown Columbus in their finest wedding attire.

“Guests still mention to me how much fun they had and that our wedding was the most unique they had ever attended. How many wedding receptions do you remember 25 years later?” said Mark. “We danced in front of the theater, cut the cake in the historic kitchen, and took pictures throughout the place.”

Like all of us, Mark has some things he misses about the old COSI. “I wish the Presidential mannequins had made it over there, in addition to the coal mine,” he said.

Same, Mark. Same.

Seeing these photos brings back all sorts of memories. Anyone who had the chance to go to COSI before it moved has fond memories of the place, but I can’t imagine how much more special they are when it’s the place where you got married!
