12 Must-Try Frozen Treats In Columbus

Originally published 6/22/17. Updated 6/12/19.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! And no one screams louder for ice cream than me.

Seriously. Ice cream and other frozen treats are a passion of mine. I don’t discriminate against frozen custards, gelatos, Italian ices, sherbet, sorbet, and froyo. Once I left the office and got ice cream for lunch. It was a “Treat Yo’ Self” kind of day and no one could stop me. Granted, my stomach was a little upset with me for not eating a substantial lunch, but it was so worth it.

Here are 12 different frozen treats from around Ohio’s capital that have a very special place in my heart.

Gelato

via Facebook

Where to get it: Coppa Gelato
Address: 925 North State Street, Westerville, Ohio 43082
What it is: Gelato is like ice cream’s overachieving older sibling. It’s richer and denser because when gelato is made, less air is whipped into it. When I studied abroad in Spain, my friends and I would get it all the time. The gelato at Coppa Gelato tasted just like the gelato I had while in Europe. They know what they’re doing.

Rolled Ice Cream

via Facebook

Where to get it: Simply Rolled Ice Cream
Address: 970 N. High Street, Columbus, OH 43201
What it is: Ever since this place popped up in the Short North it’s been a huge hit! Rolled ice cream comes from Thailand and it’s made to order by hand. Pick your flavor and pick your toppings. It’s an experience that everyone needs to try at least once.

Gelati

via Facebook

Where to get it: Rita’s
Address: 2116 W Henderson Rd, Columbus, OH 43220
What it is: This is a combination of two of my favorite frozen delectables. It’s a perfect dollop of frozen custard atop a cup of Italian Ice. It might sound like a crazy combo, but trust me it works. Or you could just go for Italian ice. You can’t go wrong there.

Whitser

Where to get it: Whit’s Frozen Custard
Address: 3339 N High Street, Columbus OH, 43202
What it is: A Whitser is Whit’s Frozen Custard’s version of a DQ Blizzard, but they do it better. The custard is so much more filling and you definitely get your money’s worth. Plus, every Whit’s location has unique combinations on their menu for Whitsers. Or you can customize it entirely!

Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

Where to get it: Graeter’s Ice Cream
Address: 654 High Street, Columbus, OH 43085
What it is: Black raspberry chocolate chip ice cream just might be my number one favorite ice cream. Purple is my favorite color, so that might have something to with it. It’s the perfect combo of chocolatey and fruity exquisiteness. It’s the staple ice cream of Graeter’s. But that’s just this chick’s opinion.

Buckeye Fever Ice Cream

via Facebook

Where to get it: Johnson’s Real Ice Cream
Address: 2728 E Main St, Columbus, OH 43209

Where to get it: Dari Point
Address: 303 E Winter St, Delaware, OH 43015
What it is: This cone is dressed up just like that good ol’ smurf. The Papa Smurf is sure to put a smile on anyone’s face, especially the kids. But heads up! All that blue frozen goodness could turn your teeth a similar color. It’s totally worth it.

Brambleberry Crisp Ice Cream

via Facebook

Where to get it: Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams
Address: 3998 Gramercy St, Columbus, OH 43219
What it is: When I think of Jeni’s ice cream, I think of unique flavors that range from the Milkiest Chocolate in the World to fruiter things. Brambleberry crisp ice cream is just one of the flavors from Jeni’s you’ve got to try at least once. Other honorable mentions go to Salty Carmel, Darkest Chocolate, Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks, and Roasted Strawberry Buttermilk.

Handel Pops

Where to get it: Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt
Address: 5665 Feder Rd, Columbus, OH 43228
What it is: Think a cake-pop, but with ice cream. These delicious ice cream pops come in all sorts of flavors and are dunked in delicious chocolate. Once the chocolate’s hardened, you’ve got a dessert just like an ice cream bar from a store. Well, not just like it. These are so much better.

Cotton Candy Ice Cream

via Dell’s Homemade Ice Creams

Where to get it: Dells Homemade Ice Cream
Address:9345 Dublin Rd, Shawnee Hills, OH 43065
What it is: When I was younger I was crazy for cotton candy ice cream. These days it’s not my favorite flavor, but this stuff is good. Dells Ice Cream has plenty of options and it’s a great place for caffeine addicts, too. They’ve got a pretty good coffee menu.

Soft Serve Ice Cream

Where to get it: Tonys Coneys
Address: 5266 W Broad St, Columbus, Ohio, OH 43228
What it is: Classic soft serve ice cream is hard to beat, and this mom and pop shop does it right. Choose from vanilla, chocolate, or swirled cones. Get it dipped in sprinkles make a delicious, spiraled work of art. Move over, Dairy Queen. You’ve just lost the soft serve crown.

Frozen Yogurt

via Facebook

Where to get it: OH-YO! Frozen Yogurt
Address: 4226 Buckeye Pkwy, Grove City, OH 43123
What it is: Everybody’s got a favorite frozen yogurt place, but I think this OH-YO! is pretty great. But remember, adding toppings to your froyo can be dangerous. You don’t want to hike up the price too much since froyo is priced by how much your cup weighs.
